It’s easy to see why Nettie Wakefield’s pencil drawings might be described as ‘sensual’. Characterized by soft but startlingly defined lines that seem to glow under diffused light, her works accentuate the details of the human physique that typically escape our attention. The Allure of PencilsI choose to use pencil for these portraits partly because it’s my favourite medium, and also because I’m far more interested in tonality than colour. The piece also becomes slightly more mysterious when it’s deprived of colour. There is no hiding with pencil: I believe it to be an honest medium. It is the source of the stream for so many artists. Most people associate pencil drawings with the beginning of something. I prefer to use pencil to create finished pieces. I feel it is able to capture both the apparent simplicity and the provocative depth of the subject.
